Absa bank Tanzania leads ocean protection drive with Kawe beach cleanup

By Alfred Zacharia

Absa Bank Tanzania has launched a powerful new environmental campaign the Blue Ocean Initiative — with an energetic beach cleanup at Kawe Beach in Dar es Salaam.

The move signals the bank’s deepening commitment to ocean protection, climate resilience, and community action, in step with global efforts like the UN-backed Blue Climate Initiative.

On May 23, 2025, more than 100 spirited Absa staff teamed up with the Kinondoni Municipal Council for a four-hour cleanup mission.

Together, they collected piles of plastic waste and other debris, contributing a remarkable 400 volunteer hours to the fight for cleaner oceans. It was more than a cleanup, it was a message in action.

“We believe the ocean is not just a victim of climate change, it’s part of the solution,” said Oscar Mwamfwagasi, Chief Operations Officer at Absa Bank Tanzania. “Through our Blue Ocean Initiative, we’re proudly stepping into this global movement, starting right here at home.”

The initiative is deeply rooted in the bank’s purpose: “Empowering Africa’s Tomorrow, Together… One story at a time.” It’s about more than environmental care — it’s about building a better future with communities at the heart of the journey.

Aron Luhanga, Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs, didn’t hold back on the urgency of the cause.

“Over 100 million marine animals die every year from plastic pollution. The time to act is now. Through this initiative, we’re turning our brand promise, Your Story Matters, into meaningful, lasting impact,” he said.

Local leaders added their voices and presence to the cause. Mr. Saadi Mtambule, Kinondoni Municipal Council Director, joined the effort along with senior district officials.

Their involvement sent a strong signal about the power of public-private partnerships to drive real change.

The Kawe Beach cleanup is just the beginning. Absa’s Blue Ocean Initiative will roll out a series of activities aimed at raising awareness, strengthening community ties, and promoting sustainable coastal practices.

It's a long-term investment in the health of Tanzania’s coastline and the people who depend on it.

By getting its hands dirty literally Absa Bank Tanzania is setting a new standard for corporate environmental leadership.

The message is clear: protecting our oceans starts with all of us. And when businesses, governments, and communities work together, waves of change become possible.
