Dar es Salaam, April 6, 2025 Tanzanians with skills in planning cities, engineering, science, and public service have been invited to join an international program that helps countries build better, smarter, and more sustainable cities.
The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) announced that Tanzania has been given a chance to take part in a global initiative called United for Smart Sustainable Cities (U4SSC).
The program is run by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and brings together experts from around the world to work on improving cities using modern technology and smart planning.
TCRA is calling on professionals from different fields to join the program and share their knowledge and experience.
This includes people who work in city planning, science, engineering, community development, and government.
“This is a great chance for Tanzania to join the world in creating smart and sustainable cities,” said TCRA Director General, Dr. Jabiri K. Bakari.
“We encourage experts to take part and contribute ideas that will help shape the future of our towns and cities.”
The U4SSC program is divided into two groups, and participants can choose the one that fits their skills best.
The first group is about governance and building cities that focus on people, culture, and community well-being.
It brings together social and cultural aspects to help make decisions that support community life, protect culture, and create a balance between economic growth and environmental care. More information about this group can be found here: https://u4ssc.itu.int/social-cultural-sustainability.
The second group focuses on smart and sustainable planning in construction and energy use. This part of the program looks at ways to use energy more efficiently, build smarter buildings, and reduce the effects of climate change through technology. Anyone interested in joining is advised to visit the above links and register their interest by emailing U4SSC at u4ssc@itu.int. After registering, they should also inform TCRA through dg@tcra.go.tz.
TCRA believes this program will help Tanzania gain new knowledge and also share its ideas with other countries. As cities across the country continue to grow, it is important to learn new ways to plan and manage them better.
“Our cities are developing fast. By joining this program, we will learn from others and also show the world what Tanzania has to offer,” Dr. Bakari added.
The U4SSC program supports countries in using digital tools and smart ideas to solve everyday problems in cities—like traffic, energy use, housing, and environmental protection. It also helps countries reach international goals for sustainable development.
TCRA hopes that many Tanzanian professionals will join the program and help the country build cities that are smart, safe, and friendly for everyone.
