Tanzania falls to Zambia in AFCON U-17 opener

Tanzania began its U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign on a disappointing note, suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to Zambia in their opening Group A match at Stade El Bachir in Morocco today.

Zambia's young Chipolopolo took control early and maintained dominance throughout, with four different players getting on the scoresheet to secure a commanding victory.

The breakthrough came in the 8th minute when Jonathan Kalimina put Zambia ahead. Just before halftime, in the 45th minute, Abel Nyirongo doubled their lead, finishing from close range after a well-placed cross from Nthasilwe Malupande.

Tanzania had their chances, particularly in the early stages of the second half, with Juma Sagwe leading the attack. However, Zambia's defense stood firm, denying multiple attempts.

In the 79th minute, Zambia extended their lead when Mike Mutale found the back of the net following a VAR review that confirmed the goal.

Despite Tanzania’s late push, which saw Sagwe score a consolation goal with a header in the dying minutes, Zambia had the final say.

Substitute Gabriel Phiri sealed the win just two minutes later, rounding off an impressive performance with Zambia’s fourth goal.

This victory puts Zambia in a strong position at the top of Group A alongside Morocco, both with three points. Meanwhile, Tanzania faces an uphill battle and must regroup quickly before their crucial match against Uganda in two days.

Speaking after the match, Tanzania’s Serengeti Boys coach, Agrey Moris, attributed the loss to a lack of concentration and slow reactions.

"The match was balanced in terms of opportunities, but our opponents made the most of theirs and secured the win, whereas we failed to capitalize on ours," said Moris.

"Now, this game is behind us. Our focus shifts to the upcoming match against Uganda. We know them well, and the coaching staff will work on strategies to ensure we fight for a crucial result," he added.
