Leading climate change experts gathered in Arusha for an impactful outreach event focused on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) processes in Eastern Africa.

The event aimed to discuss and highlight contributions to climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts within the region.

The primary objectives of the event included raising awareness about the IPCC, sharing information on the outcomes of the IPCC’s Seventh Assessment Cycle, and exploring opportunities for participation in the IPCC process, including authorship and peer review of its reports.

Additionally, the event served as a platform to exchange lessons learned and best practices in climate change science, while encouraging and motivating scientists, experts, practitioners, lecturers, and students to engage with the IPCC process, particularly regarding the Seventh Assessment Report (AR7).

The event was jointly organized by the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) and the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), with participation from numerous scientists across East Africa, joining virtually for the session.

Prof. Judge Mshibe Ali Bakari, Chairperson of TMA’s Board, was the guest of honor at the event. He underscored the significance of involving climate change scientists in the IPCC process, emphasizing the importance of regional representation.

“I hope that through outreach events like this, we will see increased participation from East African scientists and experts in the preparation of the IPCC Seventh Assessment Report (IPCC AR7).

Given the rise in the frequency and intensity of extreme climate events, we at TMA remain committed to being at the forefront of providing world-class early warning services to safeguard climate-sensitive sectors and the general public,” said Judge Mshibe.

Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a, Acting Director General of TMA and Vice Chair of the IPCC, discussed the critical role of IPCC reports in shaping global climate action.

He highlighted how these reports provide the best available scientific data and actionable insights that inform effective adaptation and mitigation strategies.

“The IPCC AR7 will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of climate action. I look forward to sharing further insights during this event and exploring ways to enhance our participation in the IPCC processes, particularly the upcoming IPCC Seventh Assessment Report Cycle (IPCC AR7),” Dr. Chang’a added.
