The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) has officially released its forecast for the 2025 long rains season, covering regions that typically experience two rainy seasons each year.

During a press conference held on January 23, 2025, at Ubungo Plaza, Dr. Ladislaus Changa, TMA’s Acting Director General and the Permanent Representative of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), shared insights about the anticipated weather patterns.

He highlighted that average to above-average rainfall is expected in the North Eastern Highlands and the eastern parts of Mara and Simiyu regions.

Conversely, average to below-average rainfall is forecasted for the northern coastal areas, northern Kigoma region, and the Lake Victoria Basin, including Kagera, Geita, Mwanza, Shinyanga, and western regions of Simiyu and Mara.

"Expectations indicate average to above-average rainfall in most of the North Eastern Highlands and the eastern areas of Mara and Simiyu.

On the other hand, areas such as the Northern Coastal zones, northern Kigoma, and parts of the Lake Victoria Basin are likely to experience average to below-average rainfall during the 2025 long rains season," Dr. Changa noted.

The report also points to an increase in rainfall during April, coupled with a warning about potential extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall that could impact regions expected to receive average or below-average precipitation.

Dr. Changa further emphasized that the forecasted lower-than-average rainfall in certain areas may lead to water shortages, affecting domestic use, agriculture, and livestock farming.
