The Ministry of Energy, led by Deputy Minister Hon. Judith Kapinga, has presented the 2024/2025 budget implementation report for the period of July to December 2024 to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals.
The report highlights significant milestones achieved in electricity generation, rural electrification, and clean energy initiatives.
Speaking on behalf of the Deputy Minister, the Ministry’s Director of Policy and Planning, Petro Lyatu, detailed the implementation of key projects aligned with the government’s strategic priorities.
These include increasing electricity generation capacity, expanding the national grid to underserved regions, and advancing energy efficiency and clean cooking solutions.
The Ministry has made notable progress in enhancing electricity access, extending rural electrification to more hamlets across mainland Tanzania.
Strategic oil and gas projects, including the development of a liquefied natural gas processing facility, have also been prioritized to bolster energy security.
By December 2024, the installed electricity generation capacity connected to the national grid reached 3,091.71 megawatts, primarily driven by the completion of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project, where five out of nine turbines are now operational and contributing to the grid.
The Ministry also finalized the Energy Efficiency Strategy (2024/2025) in November 2024, which was launched on December 3, 2024, during the East African Community and Southern African Development Community Regional Energy Efficiency Forum.
This strategy aims to reduce energy costs, promote efficient resource use, and ensure households have access to clean cooking energy.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, Dr. David Mathayo David, commended the Ministry's achievements and emphasized the importance of supporting President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s agenda for clean cooking energy.
He called on the Ministry to intensify research, raise public awareness, and develop policies to protect energy infrastructure and ensure affordable cooking gas is accessible nationwide.
These efforts reflect the government’s commitment to improving energy access, promoting sustainability, and driving economic development for all Tanzanians.
