The President of the United Republic of Tanzania and Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defense, and Security Cooperation, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, led an emergency virtual summit of the SADC Organ Troika on January 5, 2025.
The high-level meeting was held from the Tunguu State Lodge in Zanzibar.
Tanzanian leaders who joined the summit included the Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, H.E. Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo; the Minister of Defense and National Service, H.E. Dr. Stergomena Tax; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Dr. Samwel Shelukindo; and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defense and National Service, Dr. Faraji Mnyepe.
The summit also brought together representatives from Zambia and Malawi, the other member states of the SADC Organ Troika.
Discussions centered on the escalating political crisis in Mozambique, which has been grappling with unrest since the October 9, 2024, general elections.
The opposition's rejection of the election results has triggered political turmoil, threatening stability in the country.
The leaders deliberated on actionable strategies for SADC to support Mozambique in navigating the political impasse, restoring peace, and ensuring long-term stability.
The summit underscored SADC’s commitment to regional peace and security, reaffirming the Organ Troika’s role in addressing pressing political and security challenges within the bloc.
