On January 9, 2024, the Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dunstan Kitandula, conducted an inspection of development projects being implemented under the REGROW initiative, aimed at enhancing natural resource management and boosting tourism in southern Tanzania, at Mikumi National Park.

During the visit,  Kitandula assessed the progress of various infrastructure developments, including the construction of a modern airstrip, guest reception facilities, two state-of-the-art gates, and new, modern guest accommodation.

He urged project managers to prioritize the maintenance of the modern infrastructure being constructed, emphasizing that the successful completion of these projects would yield substantial benefits to both the local communities and the nation as a whole. He stressed that these initiatives would stimulate growth in the tourism sector, improve visitor services, and increase tourist traffic to Mikumi National Park, thereby boosting tourism revenue and contributing to the economic development of the surrounding areas.

“These modern infrastructures are vital for unlocking economic and social opportunities, particularly for the communities surrounding Mikumi National Park. We must ensure that these projects are completed on schedule so that local populations can begin reaping the benefits that stem from this initiative,” said Hon. Kitandula.

The REGROW project, implemented by the Tanzanian government, is designed to improve tourism infrastructure, strengthen natural resource management, and attract investments into the tourism sector. As part of the project, significant improvements have been made to Mikumi National Park, including upgraded road networks, information centers, and enhanced visitor services. Hon. Kitandula emphasized the importance of these projects in advancing the tourism sector, calling on project managers to fully support the vision of President Samia Suluhu Hassan by ensuring the proper oversight and maintenance of the infrastructure.

Additionally, the Senior Assistant Conservation Commissioner for the Eastern Zone, John Nyamhanga, highlighted how the REGROW project has transformed the landscape of Mikumi National Park. He underscored that the infrastructure improvements would increase the park’s tourism offerings, leading to an increase in tourist arrivals and contributing to national economic growth.

The REGROW project at Mikumi National Park stands as a clear indication of the Government of Tanzania's dedication to conserving and developing the country’s natural resources for the benefit of its citizens and the overall prosperity of the nation.
