The construction of the JP Magufuli Bridge, connecting Mwanza and Geita regions, has reached 96.3% completion and is set to be finalized by the end of February 2025, according to Minister of Works, Abdallah Ulega.

During an inspection visit on January 24, 2025, in Mwanza, Minister Ulega commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her unwavering support, noting that over TZS 611 billion has been allocated to the project.

He highlighted the significant progress made under her leadership, with the project advancing from 25% completion and TZS 150 billion in payments when she assumed office to its current status.

"This bridge, the longest in East Africa, will enable people to cross in just five minutes, transforming transportation and connectivity in the region," Ulega remarked.

He also praised local engineers and technicians for their involvement in the project, emphasizing the importance of the expertise they have gained.

"The skills and technology acquired here are a national asset. Work tirelessly to complete this project, as it will pave the way for your involvement in future strategic projects," he urged.

Acting CEO of TANROADS, Eng. Doroth Mtenga, underscored the bridge's social and economic significance. Spanning 3 kilometers with an additional 1.6-kilometer connecting road, the project is expected to revolutionize transport across the Lake Victoria corridor.

It will enhance access to the Sirari-Usagara-Geita-Bukoba-Mutukula route, creating seamless connections with neighboring countries, including Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi.

This improved connectivity is anticipated to boost trade and economic activities in the Lake Zone and the nation at large.

Designed to support loads of up to 160 tons, the bridge is engineered to last over 100 years, a testament to its durability and strategic importance.

Regional Commissioner for Geita, Martin Shigella, and CCM Chairman for Mwanza Region, Michael Masanja, expressed gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, describing the project as a social and economic game-changer for the Lake Victoria region.

"This bridge will unlock countless opportunities for the people in this region and beyond," they said.

The JP Magufuli Bridge stands as a landmark infrastructure project that promises to enhance connectivity, reduce travel times, and stimulate economic growth in Tanzania and East Africa.
