The government has allocated TZS 400 million through the Rural Energy Agency (REA) to subsidize the distribution of 19,530 6-kg gas cylinders in Dodoma Region.
The initiative, in partnership with Lake Gas Ltd, aims to promote the use of clean cooking energy in rural and peri-urban areas.
Launched on January 8, 2025, by Dodoma Regional Commissioner Rosemary Senyamule in Chamwino District, the project will reduce the price of a gas cylinder by 50%, bringing it down to TZS 20,825 from the market price of TZS 41,650.
Senyamule highlighted the government’s commitment to making clean energy affordable, improving public health, conserving the environment, and enhancing citizens’ quality of life.
Acting REA Director-General, Mr. Emanuel Yesaya, noted that the project will supply the gas cylinders and accessories to six districts in Dodoma, with each district receiving 3,255 cylinders.
The initiative also includes training on the safe and efficient use of gas, ensuring long-term benefits. Chamwino District Commissioner Janeth Mayanja emphasized the environmental advantages, such as reducing deforestation and indoor air pollution, and the social impact of empowering women by freeing up their time for economic activities.
The program is expected to drive both economic and social development in the region while mitigating the effects of climate change.
