Eastern Africa Journalists unite under new leadership, rebrand Regional body as Federation of Eastern Africa Journalists (FEAJ)

By Alfred Zacharia

The rebranding of the Eastern Africa Journalists Association (EAJA) to the Federation of Eastern Africa Journalists (FEAJ) marks a significant milestone for media professionals across the region.

The transformation, decided during a historic meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, on January 16, 2025, reflects a renewed commitment to advancing the rights and interests of journalists.

By adopting a new identity, the organization aims to strengthen its advocacy efforts, address critical challenges in the media landscape, and build greater solidarity among journalists from its 12 member countries.

The decision to rebrand comes at a time when the media industry in Eastern Africa faces growing threats to press freedom and deteriorating working conditions.

As a restructured trade union organization operating under the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ), FEAJ is now better positioned to represent journalists in the region and champion their collective rights. Its expanded mission and clearer identity signify a step forward in empowering journalists to face these challenges with a unified voice.

The election of new leadership further underpins the transformation of FEAJ.

Erick Oduor, the newly elected President, brings extensive experience from his role as Secretary-General of the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ).

Vice President Patrick Oyet, President of the Union of South Sudanese Journalists, represents the resilience needed in regions experiencing political instability.

Secretary-Treasurer Solange Ayanone of Rwanda, along with Executive Committee Members Mussa Juma from Tanzania and Promise Twinamukye from Uganda, add critical expertise and diverse perspectives to the leadership team.

Together, they symbolize a blend of experience and dedication crucial for navigating the complex challenges journalists face.

FEAJ’s rebranding and leadership election also underscore the organization’s focus on promoting press freedom, improving working conditions, and ensuring the safety of journalists.

Advocacy efforts will now emphasize tackling censorship, combating political interference, and pushing for economic stability within the media industry.

With these objectives, FEAJ aims to provide a stronger platform for journalists to operate freely and effectively, contributing to more informed and accountable societies.

The organization’s renewed focus on capacity building is also pivotal.

As journalism adapts to new technologies and shifting audience behaviors, FEAJ plans to empower its members with the skills needed to thrive in a changing landscape.

By fostering professional growth and ethical reporting, the organization seeks to elevate the quality and impact of journalism throughout Eastern Africa.

FEAJ’s transformation occurs in a region where media professionals often operate in hostile environments, facing risks ranging from physical harm to legal persecution. By uniting journalists under a single, rebranded body, FEAJ sends a powerful message of regional solidarity.

This unity not only amplifies their collective voice but also strengthens their ability to address shared challenges, ensuring that journalism remains a vital force for democracy and transparency.

This rebranding and leadership renewal signify more than a structural change; they represent a bold vision for the future of journalism in Eastern Africa.

With a strong foundation and a clear mission, FEAJ is poised to lead the way in safeguarding the rights and welfare of journalists while fostering an environment where press freedom can flourish.
