Dar es Salaam regional commissioner visits Wazo Hill Cement Factory

By Alfred Zacharia

The Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner (RC),  Albert Chalamila, visited Wazo Hill Cement Factory in Kinondoni District on January 17, 2025, to address recurring complaints raised by the factory management.

The visit aimed to assess challenges hindering the factory's operations and identify solutions.

During his visit, RC Chalamila pointed out key issues, including land encroachment, which has significantly reduced the factory’s operational space despite its initially vast area.

He also highlighted challenges in securing an adequate water supply essential for the factory’s production needs.

To resolve these challenges, RC Chalamila instructed the Kinondoni District Commissioner to convene a meeting next week involving local residents, regional and district authorities, and the factory’s management.

The meeting is expected to resume dialogue and find practical solutions to the issues at hand. Additionally, the RC directed the Chief Executive Officer of DAWASA to visit the factory immediately and work closely with its management to address the water supply problem effectively.

Furthermore, the RC tasked the Deputy Regional Land Commissioner to collaborate with legal experts under the supervision of the Regional Administrative Secretary to form a small committee.

This team will review complaints and court rulings related to the encroached land and provide recommendations to the RC on how to address investor grievances.

RC Chalamila underscored the factory's significance to the region and the nation at large, noting its vital role in creating employment opportunities and contributing to national revenue.

He reiterated the importance of protecting such investments for the broader public interest.
