Tanzania’s international tourism sector has experienced unprecedented growth, with revenue increasing by an impressive 68.2%, soaring from USD 2.0 billion in 2021 to TZS 3.4 trillion in 2023, highlighting the sector's resilience and immense potential.
The number of international tourists increased by 96%, growing from 922,692 in 2021 to 1,808,205 in 2023. These achievements underscore the effectiveness of the government’s efforts to position Tanzania as a premier global tourism destination.
Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa celebrated these milestones on December 20, 2024, during the launch of the Conservation and Tourism Awards in Arusha.
He acknowledged the sector’s critical role in Tanzania’s economic growth, attributing much of its success to President Samia’s strategic leadership.
“This sector alone contributes 21.5% to the gross domestic product, with 17.2% coming from tourism and 4.3% from forestry and beekeeping,” Majaliwa stated.
He further noted that the sector accounts for 30.9% of foreign exchange earnings, with tourism contributing 25% and forestry and beekeeping 5.9%.
During the event, the Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism to establish clear and transparent criteria for the selection and awarding of conservation and tourism accolades.
These criteria should focus on excellence in environmental conservation, quality tourism services, wildlife management, and the development of tourist attractions.
The Conservation and Tourism Awards aim to foster competition among stakeholders within the Natural Resources and Tourism sector, a vital pillar of Tanzania’s economic growth. By incentivizing excellence, these awards will enhance the sector’s contribution to national revenue and economic diversification.
Majaliwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to further strengthening the sector. “The government will continue to bolster this vital pillar of the economy by fostering innovation and sustainability in its operations,” he said.
Ambassador Dr. Pindi Chana, Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, also lauded President Samia’s unwavering dedication to the rapid growth of the sector. “Her leadership has transformed the Natural Resources and Tourism sector into a cornerstone of our national development,” she stated.
The Conservation and Tourism Awards stand as a testament to the sector’s remarkable progress and the government’s ongoing efforts to promote Tanzania as a world-class destination for tourists and investors alike.
