On December 21, 2024, Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Hon. Albert Chalamila, held a meeting with various business stakeholders and institutions in Kariakoo, discussing several key issues aimed at improving the business environment that meets international standards
Among the attendees were representatives from the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO), Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROAD), Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA), Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Authority (DAWASA), financial institutions, and the Regional Security Committee.
A major topic was the need to enhance security, enabling businesses to operate 24/7.
"I commend the City Council for initiating the procurement process for security cameras, which will be installed in various key locations across Kariakoo," said RC Chalamila, highlighting efforts to increase safety and ensure round-the-clock business operations.
Another crucial point discussed was how to alleviate congestion in Kariakoo.
RC Chalamila explained that the meeting focused on a joint plan to prevent all types of vehicles, Bajaj, and motorcycles from entering the central streets of the market during peak hours—morning, afternoon, and evening.
"Kariakoo is a vital commercial hub, not only for Tanzania but also for neighboring countries. We need to find practical solutions to reduce congestion while maintaining smooth operations for businesses," Chalamila stated.
The plan involves allowing vehicles only at night, which will ease traffic during the day and create a more conducive environment for business.
RC Chalamila also proposed that Kariakoo be designated as a "Special Business Zone."
"In the future, anyone wishing to do business here will need to meet specific criteria, ensuring that the area remains well-organized and conducive to commerce," he added.
Additionally, the Regional Commissioner encouraged business owners and stakeholders, including financial institutions, to consider extending their working hours, especially as the year-end holidays approach.
"Extending business hours during this peak period will allow citizens better access to goods and services and enhance the overall economy," he urged.
In conclusion, Hon. Chalamila called on the police to bolster security during the holiday season.
"With increased demand for goods during this period, it is crucial that we ensure safety for both business owners and the public. Extending business hours will also make it easier for citizens to access the products and services they need," he emphasized.
