Tanzanian Boxer dies after TKO defeat

By Our Reporter

The Tanzanian boxing community is in mourning after the untimely death of Hassan Mgaya, a determined young fighter whose life was tragically cut short following a technical knockout (TKO) during a six-round bout in Dar es Salaam.

The fight, held on the evening of December 28, 2024, at Tandale Kwa Mtogole, saw Mgaya face Paulo Elias in what should have been a display of sportsmanship and skill. Instead, it ended in heartbreak.

The fight, organized by Golden Gloves Promotions and Ngoswe Uwezo, took place at Dunia Ndogo Hall.

The non-title match drew a modest but enthusiastic crowd eager to witness local talent in action. For Mgaya, the bout was an opportunity to showcase his resilience and passion for a sport to which he had devoted much of his life.

However, tragedy struck in the sixth round when Mgaya was knocked down. According to eyewitnesses, the referee counted him out, signaling the end of the fight by TKO.

Moments later, Mgaya attempted to rise but stumbled and collapsed in the ring.

"After the referee's count, he took a few steps and suddenly fell unconscious. Medical personnel at the venue provided first aid and managed to revive him before rushing him to Sinza Hospital," said a witness who was present during the fight.

Despite initial efforts to stabilize him, Mgaya’s condition deteriorated. He was referred to Mwananyamala Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries earlier today.

Hassan Mgaya was more than just a boxer; he was a fighter in every sense of the word. Known for his dedication and humility, he had built a reputation as a promising athlete who never shied away from a challenge.

His tragic death has cast a shadow over the local boxing scene, prompting many to reflect on the risks and responsibilities inherent in the sport.

Cosmas Cheka, Treasurer of the Tanzania Boxers Association, expressed deep sorrow over Mgaya’s passing and emphasized the association’s commitment to supporting the late boxer’s family during this difficult time.

"We are handling all funeral arrangements to ensure Mgaya is laid to rest with the respect he deserves," Cheka stated. The funeral is set to take place tomorrow, December 30, 2024, in Kiwalani, Dar es Salaam.

Cheka also criticized the event's promoter, Haji Ngoswe, accusing him of negligence and lack of support.

"I have instructed our chairman, Japhet Kaseba, to write to the Tanzania Professional Boxing Regulatory Commission (TPBRC), requesting Ngoswe’s suspension. Such behavior cannot be tolerated," he added.
