Nyoni’s rise in Kabaddi leadership: a turning point for Tanzania and Africa

By Flora Mkoloma

The election of Tanzania Kabaddi Association Chairman Nyoni as President of the Africa Kabaddi Federation and Vice President of the World Kabaddi Federation (WKF) represents a watershed moment for Kabaddi’s development in Africa and highlights Tanzania’s growing influence on the global sports stage.

Confirmed during the WKF General Assembly, Nyoni’s appointment signals a shift in Kabaddi’s traditionally Asia-dominated leadership.

He replaces Egypt’s Osama Said as Africa’s leader, while Said assumes the global presidency from England’s Ashok Das. This reshuffle underscores the increasing recognition of Africa’s potential to contribute to Kabaddi’s global growth.

Nyoni’s dual roles as President of Africa’s Kabaddi Federation and WKF Vice President offer a strategic advantage.

His leadership is poised to address long-standing challenges in Africa, such as limited infrastructure, funding gaps, and the sport’s relatively low profile.

By leveraging his global position, Nyoni can attract resources, partnerships, and visibility to accelerate Kabaddi’s growth across the continent.

For Tanzania, Nyoni’s success is a testament to the country’s ability to produce influential leaders in emerging sports.

It elevates Tanzania’s international reputation and sets a benchmark for developing niche sports with untapped potential.

This achievement could motivate national policymakers and stakeholders to invest more in Kabaddi, recognizing its value as a tool for youth development, physical fitness, and international representation.

On a broader scale, Nyoni’s leadership may serve as a catalyst for unifying African countries around Kabaddi.

His vision could lead to increased participation, the establishment of regional leagues, and Africa’s stronger representation in global competitions.

Nyoni’s rise symbolizes more than personal achievement—it marks a step toward transforming Kabaddi into a truly global sport.

His success reflects Africa’s growing role in diversifying the world’s sporting landscape and sets a precedent for bold, inclusive leadership.
