Former Attorney General Judge Frederick Werema passes away at 69

Shinyanga — The legal fraternity and the nation at large are mourning the loss of retired Attorney General, Judge Frederick Werema, who passed away on Monday, December 30, 2024, at Muhimbili National Hospital. He was 69 years old.

Judge (Rtd) Thomas Mihayo, Chair of the Retired Judges Association, confirmed Werema’s passing to Azam TV, expressing sorrow at the loss of a man he described as “a pillar of wisdom and professionalism in the legal community.”

Judge Werema’s career spanned decades of dedicated service. He began as a teacher at Shaaban Robert Secondary School in 1979 before transitioning into law, where he became an advocate in 1984. 

Renowned for his meticulous approach to justice, he served as Attorney General from 2009 to 2014. 

During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in advising the government on complex legal matters and contributed to legislative reforms.

After stepping down as AG, Werema returned to the judiciary, serving as a Judge in the High Court’s Commercial Division, where his profound knowledge of commercial law earned him widespread respect. 

Known for his sharp intellect and calm demeanor, he was also deeply committed to mentoring young legal minds.

His passing marks the end of an era for Tanzania’s legal community, leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication, and humility. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
