Community Forum: a solution for citizens' conflicts and opportunities

By Lilian Kasenene, Morogoro

The monthly Community Forum organized by the Morogoro Legal Aid Centre (MPLC) has been instrumental in resolving legal challenges and offering citizens opportunities for education and personal development, driving growth within the community.

The Community Forum, initiated by MPLC, aims to create a platform where stakeholders and residents of Morogoro Municipality can come together to address challenges, share knowledge, and explore opportunities, particularly in legal and economic matters.

Several stakeholders spoke to this reporter in Morogoro, highlighting the forum's impact.

Ndege Magoma, a local resident, explained that many people lack legal knowledge when facing difficulties and often do not know how to access appropriate legal support. However, since the forum’s launch in June, the situation has improved significantly in the community.

“Through participating in the Community Forum, people have been able to present their legal issues and receive guidance, which has greatly helped them understand what actions to take to resolve their problems,” Magoma said. “I have personally gained valuable knowledge about legal matters and environmental issues, and I encourage more citizens to participate because there are many opportunities to learn and grow.”

Mariam Mussa added that the Community Forum has been especially beneficial for women, as it provides a space where they can receive entrepreneurship training. For those already running businesses, the forum offers an opportunity to promote and sell their products with ease.

“This forum is bringing positive change and will help small-scale entrepreneurs grow their businesses. Experts are always present to provide training on how to improve businesses and increase income,” Mariam said. “Every time I attend, I learn something new that helps me improve my life. I used to be afraid of starting a business, but now I feel confident to take that step and become self-reliant.”

Hassani Mikazi, Director of the Tanzania Albinism Society (TAS) in Morogoro, highlighted the forum’s growing influence, noting that more citizens and stakeholders are increasingly interested in participating to provide education and showcase their work.

“I’ve been involved in organizing the Community Forum since its inception, and I’ve witnessed the rising number of participants. It’s clear that people are eager to change their way of thinking and make the forum a regular part of their personal and professional development,” Mikazi explained.

Chediel Senzighe, the forum’s coordinator and a Legal Aid Assistant from MPLC, emphasized that the Community Forum has provided legal assistance to more than 200 citizens with various cases.

“The forum is an open space where everyone is welcome to participate, learn, and access opportunities,” Senzighe said. “Every session features experts in different fields, so participants always leave with new insights and practical knowledge to improve their lives.”
