In a rare and powerful display of unity in diversity, Cardinal Protase Rugambwa, a high-ranking Catholic figure, yesterday 10th October 2024, paid a significant visit to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) Karagwe Diocese, where he was warmly received by Bishop Benson Bagonza.

The historic encounter between these two prominent religious leaders, known for their intellectual prowess and outspoken nature, dyed the strength of interfaith collaboration in Tanzania. The duty call was more than a symbolic gesture; it was a bold affirmation of their shared mission of justice, love, and peace.

Both Cardinal Rugambwa and Bishop Bagonza, though from different Christian traditions, have long maintained a strong and respectful relationship, marked by candid conversations and mutual respect.

Their ability to speak their minds without fear or favor, and their commitment to social justice, have solidified them as influential voices in Tanzania's religious and social landscapes. This meeting, rooted in deep reflection, was a testimony to the unity that transcends denominational lines, and a beacon of hope in an increasingly divided world.

After Cardinal Protase Rugambwa's visit to the Karagwe Diocese, Bishop Benson Bagonza reflected on his Facebook account, the significance of the event with deep gratitude and a focus on unity. He emphasized the profound importance of the occasion, noting how the visit strengthened bonds between the two Christian communities.

"It was a moment of joy, reflection, and shared mission," Bishop Bagonza stated. He highlighted that the visit wasn't just ceremonial but a testament to the enduring friendship and collaboration between the Catholic and Lutheran communities in Tanzania.

Bishop Bagonza expressed how the Cardinal's return to Lukajange, where he had attended primary school, symbolized a homecoming and reconnection with roots that had shaped his spiritual journey. "We sang together, we prayed together, and we were blessed together," Bagonza noted, underlining the unity that transcends denominational boundaries.

The Bishop pointed out how Cardinal Rugambwa fondly remembered his time at Lukajange Primary School, which is owned by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT). "His memories were vivid," Bagonza recalled, noting how the Cardinal reminisced about daily prayers and spiritual formation during his school years. This connection with the past, he added, was a clear sign of how deeply intertwined their spiritual paths had been, despite belonging to different Christian traditions.

Reflecting on the Cardinal's gesture of leading a hymn that had been a favorite during his school days, Bishop Bagonza was moved by the simplicity and shared spiritual heritage. "When he led us in the hymn, 'Rock of Ages, cleft for me,' it wasn’t just a song—it was a bridge, linking our past, present, and future."

The visit, which extended beyond just the Cathedral tour, included a personal conversation between the two leaders in Bagonza's office. "We laughed, we encouraged each other, and we shared the challenges of our ministries," Bagonza mentioned. Their discussions touched on the importance of the Church's mission and the need for mutual support across denominations.

The Bishop reflected on how they were able to focus on the shared goal of serving the people of Tanzania, stating, "Our unity is in action, not in appearances. It’s about visiting one another, influencing each other with love and humility."

Bishop Bagonza concluded his reflections by emphasizing the value of diversity within unity. "We remain steadfast Lutherans, while our Catholic brothers and sisters continue their mission. Together, we serve the people of Tanzania, united in love, justice, and peace."

Cardinal Rugambwa's visit to Karagwe wasn't just a meeting of old acquaintances—it was a reaffirmation of the strength found in unity and shared purpose. The two leaders highlighted that their partnership was rooted in love, not in uniformity, and that the true mission of the Church lies in uplifting and serving all people, regardless of their denominational background.

This message of unity reflects the broader stance of both the Catholic and Lutheran leadership in Tanzania. At critical moments in the nation’s history, both churches have stood together in addressing key political and social issues.

In 2018, the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) raised concerns over governance and the suppression of political freedoms, while in 2021, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) echoed similar concerns, calling for justice and fairness.

Both church leaders stressed the importance of equality and the rule of law, calling for respect for the Constitution and political freedoms. Their united voice has become a critical pillar in advocating for peace, justice, and national cohesion in Tanzania.

Bagonza and Rugambwa’s meeting is a testament to this spirit of collaboration, reflecting how faith communities can work together toward the common good. "Our symbols are love, justice, and peace," Bishop Bagonza emphasized. As their shared mission continues, the message is clear: true unity comes from mutual respect and the relentless pursuit of justice for all.
