International Al IRSHAAD School, in collaboration with local stakeholders, has successfully hosted a marathon aimed at supporting children with special needs.
The Al IRSHAAD Marathon took place yesterday morning, September 8, at the military grounds in Masaki, DSM. This year's event marks the second season since its inaugural run last year.
The second season of the Al IRSHAAD Marathon featured diverse groups, including children, youth, and the elderly. The event was graced by a delegation from the Kinondoni District Police, with the Police Commander of Kinondoni, Afande Mtatiro Kitinkwi, represented by District Police Chief Afande Matilda Kuyeto.
In her remarks, Afande Kuyeto praised Al IRSHAAD School for organizing the marathon, which brings together athletes to promote community support for children with special needs. She highlighted the police force's role in supporting these community efforts, noting that children with special needs also have fundamental rights like other children in Tanzania.
Afande Kuyeto urged the community to protect these children from abuse, including sexual violence, which has been on the rise. She also called on parents of children with special needs to seek early education about child health.
As well, Afande Kuyeto touched on the upcoming 60th anniversary of the police force, with celebrations scheduled for September 17. She conveyed directives from the Inspector General of Police, Afande Camilius Wambura, emphasizing the need for police-community collaboration across various social spheres.
"We are in the week of celebrating the 60th anniversary of the police force," Afande Kuyeto stated. "Inspector General Wambura has directed us to engage with the community actively. We ask the public to continue cooperating with the police in various matters. Our presence here is part of implementing this community involvement philosophy. The police are part of the community, and we rely heavily on you for information to carry out our duties."
Following the event, Neema Twalib, a representative of Al IRSHAAD School, expressed satisfaction with the marathon’s progress.
"We are pleased with the positive response to this year's marathon," Neema Twalib said. "It’s heartening to see our contribution to the community by supporting children with special needs, making them feel recognized and valued. Compared to last year’s inaugural event, this year's response has been even greater. We are optimistic about a stronger turnout next season as we continue to engage and inspire the community."
The marathon concluded with a vibrant awards ceremony, where participants from various categories were recognized for their efforts. Winners and runners-up received medals, trophies, and certificates, celebrating their achievements and contributions to the cause. The event not only highlighted athletic excellence but also underscored the community's commitment to supporting children with special needs. The joyous atmosphere and spirited applause reflected the successful integration of community and charitable goals.
