THF moves to strengthen refereeing ahead of Nyerere Cup

The Tanzania Handball Federation (THF) is strengthening preparations for the Nyerere Cup by training referees who will officiate the tournament, in a move aimed at ensuring fair play and professional standards throughout the competition.

The tournament is scheduled to take place in Dar es Salaam from October 8 to 14 and is expected to bring together teams from Tanzania and other countries in the region.

Speaking to The Respondent Online, THF President Michael Chibawala said the referee training will focus on refreshing officials’ understanding of handball rules and equipping them to make fair and accurate decisions during matches.

He said the training will also provide referees with an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they gain in practical match situations once the tournament begins.

“Both the training and the tournament will have an international outlook, as participants from different countries will join us in commemorating the legacy of the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere,” Chibawala said.

According to Chibawala, preparations for the tournament are progressing well, with the federation committed to ensuring that matches are conducted professionally and competitively, while giving all participating teams a fair opportunity to compete for the title.

He said Kenya and Rwanda are among the countries that have already confirmed their participation, adding that their involvement will further raise the tournament’s competitive and international profile.

Beyond competition, the Nyerere Cup is expected to give Tanzanian players and officials valuable exposure, while contributing to the growth of handball and strengthening sporting relations between Tanzania and neighbouring countries.
