Tanis seeking to expand beach handball to more regions, with Mwanza set to host a national club championship in November as part of efforts to identify new talent and increase participation in the sport.
The Tanzania Handball Federation (THF), through its Beach Handball Commission, said the initiative would move the sport beyond Dar es Salaam, where most activities have traditionally been concentrated.
Commission chairman Bruno Johnson said expanding the sport geographically would help attract more players, widen its talent pool and strengthen Tanzania’s ability to compete in international tournaments.
He said the National Beach Handball Club Championship, scheduled for November 25 to 29, 2026, in Mwanza, would be an important step towards achieving that goal.
“Beach handball was previously associated mainly with Dar es Salaam, but we are now working to promote it in other regions. I have inspected the facilities to ensure the competition is organised professionally, and this time we are taking the game to beaches along the lake,” he said.
The decision to stage the competition in Mwanza marks an effort to take the sport beyond its traditional base and explore opportunities offered by beaches along Lake Victoria.
Mr Johnson said invitations had already been sent to various clubs, which were expected to confirm their participation by the end of October.
However, the success of the expansion drive will also depend on the federation's ability to attract more clubs, develop playing facilities and secure financial support for competitions outside Dar es Salaam.
He appealed to stakeholders and potential sponsors to support the championship, saying their contributions would help facilitate preparations and ensure the successful organisation of the event.
The championship is expected to provide a platform for clubs to compete while giving the federation an opportunity to identify players who could represent Tanzania in international beach handball competitions.
