PM Mwigulu urges Tanzanians to prepare for disasters, starting at household level

Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba has urged Tanzanians to make disaster preparedness a shared responsibility, calling on families, government institutions, businesses and communities to take practical steps to protect lives and property.

Dr Mwigulu made the call on Tuesday while delivering a statement to mark the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction at Nelson Mandela Stadium in Sumbawanga, Rukwa Region.

He said building communities that can withstand and recover from disasters requires everyone’s participation, stressing that preparedness should begin at household level rather than waiting until an emergency occurs.

The Prime Minister said the government would continue strengthening systems for disaster prevention and risk reduction across the country, improving the flow of information and raising public awareness about early warnings and appropriate safety measures.

He emphasised that families are the foundation of society and that well-prepared households are better positioned to protect their members, respond to emergencies and recover when disasters occur.

Dr Mwigulu also called on local government authorities, research institutions, non-governmental organisations, media outlets, religious institutions and traditional leaders to join efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and resilience in their communities.

With the October-to-December short-rains season underway, he urged citizens to take weather warnings seriously and prepare in advance to minimise the risks and effects of disasters.

He encouraged the public to remain alert, follow official guidance and take necessary precautions to reduce potential losses, particularly where heavy rainfall could threaten lives, homes and other property.

The Prime Minister’s message underscores the importance of early preparation and collective action in reducing disaster risks, protecting communities and ensuring that families are better equipped to respond when emergencies arise.

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is observed annually on October 13 to promote awareness and action aimed at reducing disaster risks and strengthening resilience.
