Former President Jakaya Kikwete has urged the Dar es Salaam Water and Sanitation Authority (DAWASA) to consider building a small dam in the Wami area to secure water supplies for Chalinze as demand rises towards 2030 and 2050.
Mr Kikwete said population growth and expanding industrial activities would increase pressure on existing water sources, requiring long-term investment to prevent future shortages.
He made the remarks at his home in Msoga, Chalinze, after receiving a visit from DAWASA’s Chalinze manager, Boniface Ole Philemon.
He advised the authority to assess the feasibility of constructing a small dam in the Wami area as part of efforts to increase water availability and meet the area's projected needs over the coming decades.
Mr Kikwete also recommended discussions with Mtibwa sugar estates in Morogoro Region to establish their water consumption and determine how more water could be allowed to flow into the Wami River.
He further urged authorities to take into account water use by Bagamoyo Sugar when planning how to allocate and manage the available resources.
The proposals highlight the need to balance water demand from households, industries and agricultural activities, particularly in areas experiencing population growth and economic expansion.
For Chalinze residents, reliable water supplies are essential for household use, while businesses and industries also depend on adequate and predictable access to the resource.
The suggested dam and consultations with major water users could form part of broader planning to ensure that future demand does not outstrip available supplies. However, the proposals would require technical assessments and consultations with relevant stakeholders before implementation.
