The government has ordered the contractor upgrading the 5.7-kilometre road from the Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) junction to the airport to meet international standards and complete the project within 200 days, as Tanzania prepares to host more visitors during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Deputy Minister for Works Godfrey Kasekenya issued the directive during an inspection of the project, stressing the importance of completing the road on time given its role in connecting the airport with the tourism hubs of Arusha and Moshi.

He said the road was a key entry point for international visitors and should reflect the quality of infrastructure expected in a major tourism destination.

“The government has decided to upgrade this road, which will serve many visitors during AFCON. It must therefore be completed early and equipped with essential road signs, street lighting and pedestrian walkways,” Eng Kasekenya said.

The upgrade is expected to improve access to the airport while enhancing road safety and the experience of travellers arriving in northern Tanzania, a region known for its tourism attractions.

The minister said the project should be executed to the required quality standards, noting that its importance extended beyond transport to supporting tourism and the movement of visitors during major events.

Eng Godlisten Nasario, the official supervising the project, said the team was committed to completing the works within the agreed timeframe and meeting the required standards.

The contractor, Rocktronic, is expected to deliver the 5.7-kilometre section within 200 days.

The project’s timely completion will be important for travellers, airport users and tourism businesses that depend on reliable access between KIA and the surrounding urban centres.

The government’s emphasis on road signs, lighting and pedestrian facilities also places road safety among the key considerations as the infrastructure is upgraded.
