Energy Minister Juma Zuberi Homera has directed institutions overseeing Tanzania’s oil and natural gas sector to strengthen coordination and accountability, with a focus on securing fuel supplies and protecting consumers.

Dr Homera issued the directive on Monday, October 5, 2026, during a meeting with senior officials from institutions responsible for petroleum and natural gas at the Ministry of Energy’s offices in Dar es Salaam.

The meeting reviewed the performance of the institutions and discussed challenges affecting the petroleum sector, including fuel availability, security of supply and the management of oil and natural gas activities.

Dr Homera said closer cooperation among the institutions was necessary to ensure the country has adequate fuel supplies when needed and that the sector operates efficiently.

He directed the institutions to work together to ensure reliable and timely availability of petroleum products while ensuring prices take into account the interests of consumers.

The minister also called for stronger management of Tanzania’s oil and natural gas resources, stressing that the resources should contribute more effectively to economic growth and national development.

The directive comes as fuel supply and pump prices remain issues of direct concern to households and businesses, with changes in petroleum prices affecting transport costs and the prices of goods and services.

Dr Homera emphasised that institutions under the ministry must execute their responsibilities efficiently and remain accountable in managing a sector that has a direct impact on the wider economy.

The meeting was attended by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary responsible for Petroleum and Natural Gas, James Mataragio; Petroleum Commissioner Goodluck Shirima; and officials from the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) and Petroleum Bulk Procurement Agency (PBPA).

The minister’s meeting with the sector institutions is part of efforts to strengthen oversight and coordination across Tanzania’s petroleum supply chain and natural gas industry.
