Development Swimming Gala to create opportunities for Tanzania’s Young Swimmers

Young swimmers in Tanzania are set to benefit from the upcoming Development Swimming Gala, which aims to nurture emerging talent and open pathways to scholarships, employment and national and international competition.

The event is expected to help young people recognise swimming not only as a recreational activity but also as a sport that can support their education, personal development and future careers.

Organised by Champion Rise in collaboration with Africa Aquatics, World Aquatics and the Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA), the competition will take place on October 10 and 11, 2026, at the Shaban Robert Swimming Pool in Upanga, Dar es Salaam.

Speaking to The Respondent Online, TSA Director of Development and Education Jeremiah Keema said the gala aims to change perceptions about swimming and encourage young athletes to take the sport more seriously.

He said swimming has the potential to create opportunities for talented young people, including access to scholarships abroad and participation in competitions that could expose them to a wider range of opportunities.

Keema said swimmers wishing to participate will pay an entry fee of TZS 50,000, while spectators will pay TZS 5,000 to watch the competition.

He explained that the event would also help participants gain greater visibility through the use of the Meet Manager system, which records swimmers’ performances and results.

“Swimmers participating in the competition will also have an opportunity to gain recognition in African and international competitions through the use of the Meet Manager system, which will help maintain records of their results,” he said.

The system is expected to help swimmers build reliable performance records, enabling them to track their progress and potentially improve their chances of being noticed at higher-level competitions.

Keema added that organisers plan to establish training camps through swimming clubs and schools after the gala to ensure that promising athletes continue receiving support beyond the competition.

The camps will focus on developing skills and nurturing talent identified during the event, giving young swimmers an opportunity to improve their performance and pursue their ambitions in the sport.

The initiative could also encourage schools, parents and communities to invest more in swimming by recognising its potential to promote physical fitness, discipline and career development among young people.

By creating opportunities for talent identification and continued training, the Development Swimming Gala aims to contribute to the growth of swimming in Tanzania and help young athletes turn their passion into meaningful opportunities for their future.
