Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Regional Administration and Local Government, Prof. Riziki Shemdoe, is attending a leadership programme at Harvard University aimed at strengthening public-sector management and policy implementation.
The four-day programme, running from Sept. 26 to Sept. 30 in Boston, brings together sector ministers from 17 countries to exchange experience on government leadership, institutional management, decision-making and implementation of public policies.
Participants are from Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria, Namibia, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Malawi, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Mauritius, Mauritania, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Togo.
The programme focuses on how ministers can improve the management of public institutions and turn government policies and development plans into programmes that deliver services to citizens.
It also provides participants with an opportunity to learn from former senior government leaders, including former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete and former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi.
Shemdoe’s participation comes in the context of Tanzania’s efforts to strengthen local government administration and improve delivery of public services, particularly through regional and local government authorities.
The training is organised by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Harvard Graduate School of Education and Harvard Kennedy School.
The organisers say the programme is intended to strengthen the leadership capacity of sector ministers and facilitate the exchange of practical experience in managing public institutions and implementing government priorities.
For Tanzania, the experience could inform efforts to improve policy execution and public-sector management as the government works towards the objectives of its National Development Vision 2050.
