Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi has inspected construction of the Zanzibar Sports City in Fumba as preparations continue for the island to host Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) matches.
Dr Mwinyi toured the project on Monday, reviewing progress on key facilities including the main football stadium, training grounds, swimming pools and a diving pool.
The complex also includes a fan zone with capacity for about 4,000 people and a port designed to accommodate both small and large boats.
The first phase of the project is scheduled for completion by December 31, 2026, according to project timelines.
The Sports City is being developed as part of Zanzibar's preparations to become one of the venues for the continental tournament.
The project is expected to add to Zanzibar's sports infrastructure, with facilities designed to support football, swimming and other sporting activities while also providing space for spectators and visitors.
Dr Mwinyi's inspection comes as construction enters a critical phase ahead of the December completion deadline.
