A hostage ordeal involving a woman and her young child ended with the death of a man wanted over multiple serious crime allegations after police shot him in Parakuyo Village, Kilosa District.
Morogoro Regional Police Commander ACP Andrew Kantimbo said the man, identified as 30-year-old Kokan State, was wanted in connection with allegations of murder, rape and armed robbery.
The incident unfolded after police traced Kokan to the village following a prolonged search for him.
According to Mr Kantimbo, Kokan was being served a drink by a woman when he allegedly grabbed her and her young child before locking himself inside a room with them.
Police said he then used the two as human shields, threatening to kill the woman and child with a machete if officers attempted to arrest him.
The standoff ended after police said repeated efforts to persuade Kokan to surrender failed, prompting officers to use firearms and fatally shoot him.
The incident has raised concerns among residents about the risks faced by civilians caught up in violent confrontations involving suspected criminals.
Rehema Masuke, a Parakuyo resident who was held inside the room, said the experience left her and the child terrified, particularly because Kokan was armed with a machete.
“We were very afraid because we did not know what would happen to us,” she said.
Kokan's father said he had repeatedly warned his son against involvement in crime, but the warnings had not stopped him from being linked to criminal incidents.
Parakuyo Village Chairman Emmanuel Kibasisi urged residents to promptly report suspected criminal activity to authorities, saying cooperation between communities and security agencies was important in preventing crime.
The police have urged young people to avoid criminal activities and pursue lawful sources of income.
The incident comes amid continued calls from security authorities for communities to share information that can help prevent violent crime and protect residents from becoming victims during criminal confrontations.
