Defending NBC Premier League champions Young Africans (Yanga) will begin their title defence on the road tomorrow when they face Namungo at Majaliwa Stadium in Lindi.
Yanga head into the opening fixture with confidence after lifting the Community Shield following their victory over arch-rivals Simba at New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar.
However, head coach Manqoba Mngqithi says his side must improve its ability to create scoring opportunities if it is to start the league campaign with maximum points.
Speaking to journalists ahead of the match, Mngqithi said creating chances had been one of his main areas of focus during preparations, particularly after assessing the team’s performance in the Community Shield.
“We believe Namungo will come into the match with confidence and may choose to defend, but they have a very good coach whom I have known since his time with the national team. We will focus on our strengths and create opportunities that can help us win the match,” Mngqithi said.
The South African coach also acknowledged the role of Yanga supporters, thanking them for their continued backing as the club begins its defence of the league title.
Yanga defender Bakari Mwamnyeto said the squad was in high spirits and fully prepared for what he expects to be a competitive encounter.
“Our morale is high because every day we train with the objective of winning. We know Namungo are a good team and have a good coach, but we also have a strong squad. The team that performs better will win, and I believe we will return home with all three points,” Mwamnyeto said.
The encounter will give Yanga an early opportunity to demonstrate their readiness to defend the title, while Namungo will be aiming to make the most of home advantage and spoil the champions’ opening-day plans.
For Yanga, however, the priority will be clear: create more chances, convert them and begin the new campaign on a winning note.
