The Weights and Measures Agency (WMA) has pledged to intensify enforcement and public education on accurate measurements in Iramba District, in a move aimed at protecting farmers and livestock keepers from losses arising from improper weighing practices.
The commitment was made on August 8, 2026, when Iramba District Commissioner Selemani Mwendwa visited the WMA pavilion during the 33rd Nane Nane Farmers’ Exhibition at the Dr John Samuel Malecela Grounds in Dodoma.
Mr Mwendwa was briefed on the importance of using approved and accurate weighing and measuring instruments in agricultural markets, livestock auctions and other trading points.
WMA Singida Regional Manager Willie Amosi said the agency would work with the district authorities to expand measurement education to different parts of Iramba, particularly targeting maize, sunflower and cotton farmers as well as livestock keepers.
“WMA will work with the District Commissioner’s Office to coordinate and provide education on measurement standards in different areas of Iramba,” Mr Amosi said.
He said the initiative would focus on reaching farmers and livestock keepers at markets and livestock auctions, where accurate measurements are critical in determining the value of produce and animals.
Mr Amosi also said WMA planned to establish Measurement Clubs in primary and secondary schools as part of a wider strategy to promote awareness of measurement standards among young people.
The clubs, he said, would contribute to efforts to build a culture of using accurate measurements across Mainland Tanzania, where WMA carries out its mandate.
The agency will also strengthen cooperation with the Iramba District Commissioner’s Office to enable residents to report the use of unauthorised or non-standard measuring instruments in markets.
Mr Amosi said complaints would be acted upon promptly, with legal action taken against those found using equipment that does not comply with measurement regulations.
Mr Mwendwa welcomed the initiative, saying the district government was ready to work with WMA to ensure residents receive fair value for their produce and livestock.
“I am very pleased. As the district government, we are ready to work with WMA to ensure accurate measurements are used and that citizens receive the full value of their efforts,” he said.
He expressed his desire to see Iramba become one of the districts leading in the use of accurate measurements in agriculture, fishing and livestock keeping.
WMA officials also handed Mr Mwendwa educational materials on measurement standards, which he will use to support continued public awareness of the importance of accurate measurements.
