TARURA turns to weather data to protect roads, improve planning

The Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) is strengthening the use of weather information in road planning, construction and maintenance as part of efforts to reduce weather-related damage and improve the durability of district roads.

TARURA officials have received training from the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) on how to interpret and apply weather forecasts, particularly seasonal rainfall information, when implementing road infrastructure projects.

TMA Director General Dr Ladislaus Chang’a said road projects should be designed and implemented with weather conditions in mind to minimise disruptions and potential damage caused by heavy rains and other adverse weather events.

He said the training would equip TARURA staff with the knowledge needed to use meteorological information for early preparedness and better scheduling of construction and maintenance works.

“Timely use of weather information can help authorities anticipate risks and take appropriate measures before adverse weather affects infrastructure,” Dr Chang’a said.

For citizens, better integration of weather information into road projects could translate into fewer weather-related disruptions, improved road access and more efficient use of public funds allocated to construction and maintenance.

TARURA Chief Executive Engineer Victor Seff thanked TMA for the training, saying the knowledge would help the agency incorporate weather information into the design, construction and maintenance of district roads.

He said the partnership was important as changing weather patterns continue to influence infrastructure development across the country.

Engineer Seff said using reliable weather forecasts would enable TARURA to make better-informed decisions, plan works more effectively and strengthen the resilience of roads against extreme weather conditions.

The initiative highlights the growing importance of cooperation between infrastructure and meteorological authorities in ensuring that public infrastructure is planned not only for current needs but also for increasingly variable weather conditions.
