Tanzania reach FEASSA 2026 football final after Rwanda win

Tanzania have reached the final of the FEASSA 2026 boys’ secondary school football tournament after beating Rwanda 3-1 in a hard-fought semi-final at Jamhuri Stadium in Morogoro on August 20.

The result keeps the hosts on course for the title as the East African secondary schools championship heads towards its conclusion on August 23, when the winners will be crowned.

Tanzania produced a determined performance to overcome a familiar Rwanda side that had also featured in the same group as the hosts. Tanzania won their earlier meeting 1-0, but Rwanda returned for the semi-final with a stronger approach.

Tanzania head coach Erick Mfugale said reaching the final was an important achievement, but stressed that the team must remain focused as it prepares for the decisive match.

“We have managed to reach the final after beating Rwanda. The match was not easy because we had already faced them in the group stage. We won 1-0 in the first meeting, but today they came better prepared,” Mfugale said.

He said the team would now concentrate on recovering and preparing thoroughly for the final, with the ultimate objective of winning the championship on home soil.

Mfugale also credited the government’s investment in sports for creating opportunities for young athletes to develop and compete at regional and international level.

He particularly thanked President Samia Suluhu Hassan, saying improved investment in sports, combined with the team’s preparations and training camp, had contributed to Tanzania’s strong showing in the tournament.

Tanzania’s impressive campaign has also been reflected in the performance of its regional teams. Four Tanzanian teams Mwanza, Tabora, Mbeya and Morogoro—advanced to the quarter-finals, while Mbeya and Morogoro progressed to the semi-finals.

With a place in the final secured, Tanzania will now look to complete its campaign by lifting the FEASSA 2026 boys’ football title when the tournament concludes on August 23.
