Yanga head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has challenged his players to raise their level despite their 1-0 victory over Simba in the Community Shield, saying the team still has work to do, particularly in front of goal.
Yanga secured the trophy in Zanzibar yesterday after converting one of the chances they created, but Mngqithi admitted that his side could have scored more had they been more clinical in the final third.
The South African coach said the team’s biggest concern was the failure to make the most of their opportunities, an area he expects to address as Yanga prepare for the competitive season.
“From my point of view, we dominated the game to a great extent. There were moments of concern in the final 10 minutes when we were losing possession too easily, but overall, I think the boys did a great job,” Mngqithi said after the match.
He praised his players for their commitment, intensity and determination, saying they largely followed the tactical instructions given to them.
Mngqithi, however, said the narrow scoreline did not fully reflect Yanga’s performance, given the number of opportunities they created.
“Unfortunately, we did not get much from our opportunities, but it was still a big game and one that was controlled by the whole team. I am proud,” he said.
The coach was also cautious about describing the triumph as a major achievement, insisting that it was an important victory but one that should not distract the team from the challenges ahead.
“It is a good victory. I cannot say it is a great victory, but it is a good victory,” Mngqithi said.
The Community Shield victory gives Yanga an early boost ahead of the new campaign, but Mngqithi believes the team must continue improving, particularly in its efficiency in the attacking third.
He also praised Yanga supporters, popularly known as Wananchi, for their backing and the atmosphere they created during the match.
Mngqithi urged them to maintain the same support as the team enters a demanding season, saying their contribution could be crucial to Yanga’s success.
“I believe they are our 12th player and they will help us win many football matches,” he said.
