The government has pledged to scale up investment in education and vocational training infrastructure as part of efforts to equip young people with practical skills and create a workforce capable of driving economic development.
Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Ambassador Dr Bashiru Ally Kakurwa, said on Wednesday that strengthening vocational education remained critical to addressing youth unemployment and building a self-reliant nation.
He made the remarks during his working visit to Mara Region, where he inspected and laid the foundation stone for the construction of Musuguri Secondary School for Vocational and Technical Education in Butiama District.
The project, valued at TZS1.6 billion, is expected to expand access to technical and practical education while giving students skills that can improve their employment and entrepreneurship prospects.
“The government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan has continued to invest in improving education and vocational training infrastructure to build a self-reliant nation through young people,” Dr Bashiru said.
He said the approach was in line with the ideals championed by Tanzania’s founding president, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, who placed education and self-reliance at the centre of national development.
“Construction of vocational schools such as Musuguri will help us reduce the problem of unemployment in the country,” he said.
The minister’s remarks come as Tanzania continues to emphasise skills development and technical education as key tools for preparing young people for a changing labour market and expanding opportunities for self-employment.
Addressing residents of Butiama, Dr Bashiru urged them to preserve the legacy of Mwalimu Nyerere by promoting education, skills development and self-reliance.
He also called on citizens, politicians, public servants and the private sector to contribute to the implementation of Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050, saying its objectives required collective action.
During the visit, Dr Bashiru also officially launched a newly constructed residence for the Butiama District Executive Director.
The minister later proceeded to Bunda District, where he was scheduled to inspect and launch development projects and meet residents as part of his Mara Region tour.
