Geita Traders welcome tax relief for new businesses

By The Respondents Reporter

Traders in Geita Region have welcomed tax relief for businesses with newly issued Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TINs), saying the measure will give new entrepreneurs time to establish and grow their businesses before taking on income tax obligations.

The traders said the relief provides an opportunity for start-ups to strengthen their operations, improve cash flow and build a sustainable customer base before beginning to pay income tax.

They made the remarks on August 17, 2026, during a seminar on changes to tax laws for the 2026/27 financial year held at Gedeco Hall in Geita.

The seminar was conducted by Taxpayer Education and Communication Officers from the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), who explained key changes to tax laws and their implications for businesses.

The traders said the tax relief could encourage more people to formalise their businesses, arguing that new entrepreneurs would have sufficient time to understand tax requirements and put their businesses on a stronger footing.

They also urged the Government and TRA to continue providing practical tax education to new traders, particularly on record-keeping, issuing receipts and understanding their tax obligations.

The traders were further encouraged to act as ambassadors for tax compliance by advising new business owners to issue and demand receipts for every eligible sale and purchase.

They were also reminded to maintain proper business records during the period covered by the tax relief, noting that accurate records would help them monitor their businesses and prepare for future tax obligations.

The initiative comes as the Government seeks to broaden the tax base while creating a more supportive environment for entrepreneurship and the growth of small and emerging businesses.

For new traders in Geita, the relief is being viewed not simply as a tax break, but as a window to build stronger businesses capable of meeting their obligations and contributing to the wider economy once the relief period ends.
