BoT reopens 15-year Treasury bond at 12.25%

By Our Reporter, Dar es Salaam

The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) has announced the reopening of a 15-year Treasury bond with a fixed annual coupon rate of 12.25 percent, offering investors a long-term avenue to earn returns from government securities.

The bond, identified as Treasury Bond No. 696, Auction No. 2, will be auctioned on August 19, 2026, and is scheduled to mature on February 19, 2041.

According to the BoT notice, investors can participate with a minimum investment of TZS 1 million, while the bond will pay interest twice a year, on February 19 and August 19.

Investors participating in the auction will also be required to account for accrued interest of TZS 0.0336 for every TZS 100 invested.

The central bank said the auction is open to all eligible investors, including foreign nationals, as part of efforts to broaden participation in Tanzania’s government securities market.

The reopening provides investors with an opportunity to lock in a 12.25 percent annual coupon on a long-term government instrument, while also giving the government access to domestic and international capital for financing its programmes.

Treasury bonds are among the government securities issued by the BoT to raise funds, with investors earning periodic interest before receiving the principal amount when the bond matures.

The 15-year tenor makes the latest offering particularly relevant to investors seeking long-term fixed-income instruments, including those looking to diversify their investment portfolios.

The reopening also comes as Tanzania continues efforts to deepen its capital market and expand investment opportunities available to both local and foreign investors.
