The government has expressed confidence in the progress of preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), saying implementation is on track as government institutions intensify efforts to ensure Tanzania is ready to co-host Africa's biggest football tournament.
The assessment was made by the Director of Sports Development at the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Boniface Tamba, after a two-day coordination meeting that brought together technical experts from government agencies and members of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
Speaking after the meeting, Tamba said participants reviewed the implementation status of key infrastructure projects and noted encouraging progress across several areas, including competition venues, training facilities and transport infrastructure.
"The meeting was productive and the discussions confirmed that we have made substantial progress in our preparations for AFCON 2027," he said.
He said construction of the new playing surface at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium has reached 35 per cent completion, while training grounds in Arusha are 87 per cent complete. Construction of Fumba Stadium in Zanzibar has also advanced to 62 per cent.
Tamba added that work on the access road leading to the Arusha stadium has reached 35 per cent, with construction continuing according to schedule.
Beyond infrastructure, the meeting focused on strengthening coordination among implementing institutions, harmonising work plans and enhancing monitoring systems to ensure all projects are delivered on time and in line with the tournament's requirements.
The officials also reaffirmed the importance of close collaboration among government agencies and the Local Organising Committee to maintain momentum ahead of the competition.
Tanzania will co-host the 2027 AFCON finals with Kenya and Uganda, marking the first time the three East African countries will jointly stage Africa's premier football championship.
The tournament is expected to accelerate investments in sports infrastructure while enhancing regional cooperation and showcasing East Africa's capacity to host a major international sporting event.
