Tanzania has reaffirmed its readiness to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 alongside Kenya and Uganda, with government officials assuring that preparations are progressing steadily in line with the standards set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Speaking on July 3, 2026, in Arusha, on behalf of the Chairperson of the National Permanent Secretaries Committee overseeing AFCON preparations, Dr. Jim Yonazi, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr. Hassan Abbasi, said the government is fully committed to ensuring successful delivery of the continental tournament.

Dr. Abbasi made the remarks during an inspection tour of key sports and infrastructure facilities earmarked for the tournament, including Mgambo training ground, Engutoto training pitch, Magereza training facility, and the new Arusha Stadium.

The inspection also covered major road networks managed by the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) and the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), particularly access roads to and from the stadium, where rehabilitation and improvement works are ongoing.

He said AFCON 2027 will be a landmark event in Africa’s football history, noting that it will be the first time the tournament is jointly hosted by three East African countries, and is expected to attract millions of visitors from across the continent and beyond.

“This is a major opportunity for Tanzania to showcase its capacity and earn international recognition. Every stakeholder must take responsibility in their respective areas to ensure we deliver a successful tournament that meets global standards,” Dr. Abbasi said.

He further directed contractors implementing various infrastructure projects to accelerate construction works to ensure timely completion, warning that delays could affect overall preparations for the tournament.

Arusha Regional Administrative Secretary, Dr. Toba Nguvila, said the region is actively implementing key preparations, including upgrading infrastructure and improving essential services such as water supply, healthcare, communication systems, and electricity to ensure they meet required standards ahead of the event.

He added that Arusha City is also expanding and upgrading road networks, increasing hotel capacity to accommodate visitors, and improving health facilities.

These include Mount Meru Hospital, JKCI, and NSK, which are being strengthened to provide quality medical services during AFCON 2027.
