Muhimbili uses Sabasaba to drive health insurance awareness, early screening

The push to improve healthcare access in Tanzania has gained momentum as the government continues to encourage citizens to embrace health insurance and regular health check-ups to detect diseases at an early stage.

During the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (Sabasaba), Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Dr Grace Magembe visited the Muhimbili National Hospital pavilion, where she commended the institution for using the exhibition to educate the public on healthcare services and preventive measures.

Dr Magembe said increasing public awareness about health insurance and the “Know Your Numbers” campaign is key to helping Tanzanians take greater responsibility for their health and access treatment before conditions become more serious.

She said health insurance plays an important role in reducing the financial burden on families by making medical services more accessible, while early screening allows health professionals to identify and manage illnesses on time.

“I congratulate the leadership of Muhimbili for actively participating in Sabasaba and using its pavilion to provide health education on the various services offered by the hospital,” Dr Magembe said.

She urged citizens to participate in the “Know Your Numbers” campaign by regularly checking important health indicators, including blood pressure and blood sugar levels, to identify non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes early.

Health experts have repeatedly highlighted that non-communicable diseases are becoming a growing public health concern, requiring stronger prevention, awareness and early intervention efforts.

Dr Magembe said early diagnosis improves the chances of effective treatment, reduces complications and helps citizens maintain better health and productivity.

The Muhimbili pavilion at Sabasaba has provided a platform for citizens to learn more about specialised medical services, preventive healthcare and the importance of seeking medical advice before health challenges become severe.

The government’s continued focus on health insurance awareness and preventive care reflects efforts to build a healthcare system where Tanzanians can access quality services while reducing the impact of preventable diseases on families and communities.
