The Government is set to transform Mtumba Government City in Dodoma into a national model for clean and modern energy use through the expansion of natural gas infrastructure, in a move aimed at reducing reliance on traditional fuels and promoting environmental sustainability in both public and private facilities.
The project will connect natural gas supply to government offices, embassy buildings, public institutions, commercial buildings, hotels, restaurants, and residential areas within the Mtumba Government City area, making it one of the most integrated clean energy developments in the country.
Officials say the initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to improve energy efficiency and accelerate the transition to cleaner energy sources, particularly in planned urban and administrative centres.
The development was explained by Geologist Nuru Helambili from the Wizara ya Nishati while speaking to members of the public at the Ministry’s exhibition booth during the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair, commonly known as Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair.
Helambili said the project will include the construction of a natural gas receiving terminal that will act as the main distribution hub for Mtumba Government City.
The gas will be transported using specialised vehicles from the main Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) facility located at Mlimani City in Dar es Salaam.
She added that the infrastructure will also include a gas pressure reduction station, a distribution network, and a dedicated refuelling station for vehicles using natural gas, ensuring safe and efficient supply across all connected facilities.
According to her, the system is designed to ensure reliability, efficiency, and safety in gas distribution while supporting national efforts to reduce environmental pollution caused by the use of charcoal, firewood, and other conventional energy sources in urban areas.
Helambili noted that in the 2026/2027 financial year, the government will complete the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), a key requirement before full implementation begins.
After this stage, the government will proceed with the process of identifying and contracting construction firms.
The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation has already allocated 14.40 billion shillings to support early implementation activities, including planning, assessments, and preparatory works.
Once completed, the project is expected to position Mtumba Government City as a leading example of clean energy adoption in Tanzania, while supporting national efforts to expand natural gas use in key economic and administrative hubs.
Officials further say the initiative will help improve energy access and efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance air quality, contributing to the country’s broader sustainable development goals.
