The Mjini Magharibi Region has been crowned overall winners of the National Athletics Championships, which concluded yesterday at the Filbert Bayi School Grounds in Kibaha, Pwani Region.

Mjini Magharibi secured the title after collecting a total of 19 medals, including nine gold, nine silver and one bronze, in a dominant performance that set them apart from other competing regions.

Dar es Salaam finished in second place with 14 medals, comprising four gold, four silver and six bronze, while Unguja South secured third place with 13 medals, including four gold, four silver and five bronze.

The championships attracted athletes from across the country, competing in various track and field events aimed at identifying and developing talent for national and international competitions.

Mjini Magharibi’s consistent performance across different disciplines proved decisive, as their athletes delivered strong results in both track and field events throughout the competition.

Speaking after the event, the captain of the Mjini Magharibi athletics team, Siwema Julius Matogoro, attributed the victory to discipline, commitment and intensive preparation.

He said the team’s success was built on unity, hard work and determination from all athletes and coaches involved.

“We thank God for this achievement. This success has come through hard work, discipline and strong teamwork. There is no victory without dedication and sacrifice,” said Matogoro.

The victory marks a major milestone for Mjini Magharibi and is expected to boost confidence in regional athletics development programmes as well as inspire young athletes across the country.
