By Victoria Godfrey

Former Tanzanian athletics legend Filbert Bayi has said that the ongoing investment by President Samia Suluhu Hassan in the sports sector will play a key role in developing a new generation of athletes capable of competing and excelling at both African and international levels.

Bayi made the remarks following the successful conclusion of the National Athletics Championships, noting that the event’s success was the result of strong collaboration between the Government, the Athletics Tanzania Federation (RT), sponsors, referees, journalists, and the athletes themselves.

He said the improved organization and growing participation reflect a positive direction for athletics development in the country, adding that sustained support will continue to raise standards and competitiveness.

Bayi also commended the Coast Regional Commissioner, Abubakar Kunenge, for his leadership and commitment in ensuring the championships were successfully conducted.

He further praised sponsors, including CRDB and iWater, for their continued support toward the development of sports in Tanzania.

He emphasized that the Filbert Bayi School stadium is not a private asset but a national facility belonging to all Tanzanians.

He said it should continue to be fully utilized as a platform for discovering, nurturing, and developing young athletics talent across the country.

Bayi expressed optimism that with consistent investment, structured competitions, and strong stakeholder cooperation, Tanzania will produce elite athletes capable of breaking long-standing records and achieving greater success on the international stage.
