The government has pledged to improve services for retirees by ensuring they are treated with dignity, respect and efficiency when accessing pension-related services through the Treasury.
The Minister of Finance, Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar, issued the directive to the Accountant General’s Department and Regional Treasury Offices, urging officials to prioritise retirees who dedicated their working lives to serving the nation.
Speaking during his working visit to the Regional Treasury Office in Tanga, Amb. Omar said retirees remain an important group in society whose contribution to national development must continue to be recognised through quality public services.
He directed Treasury officials to provide timely assistance, clear guidance and a smooth verification process for pensioners, warning against unnecessary delays that may inconvenience them.
“Retirees deserve services delivered with respect and professionalism because they played a key role in building this country during their years of service,” Amb. Omar said.
The minister said improving pension services would strengthen public confidence in government institutions while enhancing the welfare of retirees who depend on their benefits.
He also urged officials to educate pensioners on how to protect themselves from fraudsters who claim to assist with pension procedures, insisting that official pension services and verification processes do not require retirees to pay money to individuals.
The directive comes as the government continues efforts to strengthen public financial management and ensure citizens receive efficient services through its institutions.
Accountant General of the Government CPA Leonard Mkude thanked the minister for visiting the Tanga Regional Treasury Office, saying the engagement had encouraged staff to continue improving service delivery.
CPA Mkude said investment in staff training and capacity building had enhanced the ability of Treasury employees to provide better services to the public.
He assured that Treasury officials in Tanga would continue working with integrity, accountability and commitment to ensure retirees and other citizens receive reliable services.
“Regional Treasury Offices are an important link between the government and citizens because they bring essential financial services closer to the people,” CPA Mkude said.
He explained that Treasury offices are responsible for supporting effective management of public funds, including government payments, revenue management, bank reconciliation, pension administration and other government financial obligations.
Currently, Regional Treasury Offices operate in all 25 regions of Tanzania Mainland under the Accountant General’s Department, supporting transparency, accountability and financial discipline in government operations.
During the visit, Amb. Omar was accompanied by senior ministry officials, including Commissioner for Policy Analysis Department Dr Remidius Ruhinduka, Commissioner for Public Procurement Policy Department Alex Haraba, Acting Commissioner for Public-Private Partnership Unit Bashiru Taratibu, Tanga Regional Treasury Head Akwilina Kirita and Regional Government Assets Manager Salum Matimbwa.
