WMA pushes for accurate measurements to protect consumers and strengthen Fair Trade

The Weights and Measures Agency (WMA) has stepped up public education on the importance of using accurate and standardized measurements in business and agriculture, saying the move is key to protecting consumers, promoting fairness, and strengthening trust in trade.

Weights and Measures Agency (WMA) Acting Chief Executive Officer, Francis Olwero, said the 2026 Public Service Week has provided a strong platform for the agency to reach more citizens and raise awareness on how proper measurement systems support daily economic activities.

Speaking to journalists on June 23, 2026, at the WMA exhibition booth in Dodoma, Olwero said many citizens, investors, and public servants who visited the stand benefited from practical education on the importance of correct measurements in everyday transactions.

He said measurement is part of almost every activity in daily life, from buying food and fuel to construction materials and agricultural produce.

Because of this, he stressed that understanding and using approved measurement systems is essential to avoid losses, disputes, and unfair trade practices.

In the agricultural sector, Olwero urged farmers, traders, and brokers to ensure that crops are bought and sold using proper weighing scales rather than relying on estimates or unverified containers such as non-standard sacks.

He said using accurate measurements ensures that farmers are paid fairly for their produce while buyers also get value for their money.

He added that shifting to a proper weighing system in crop trading would help reduce misunderstandings and cheating, especially during harvest seasons when transactions increase and price disputes are more common.

Olwero further said WMA continues to conduct nationwide education campaigns to ensure that citizens understand their rights and responsibilities when it comes to measurement in trade.

He noted that many people who visited the WMA booth expressed appreciation for the information and committed to improving how they conduct business.

He reminded the public that measurement laws are in place to ensure fairness and order in the market, warning that those who fail to follow the regulations will face legal action.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumers and promoting transparent trade practices as part of efforts to support inclusive economic growth and strengthen confidence in Tanzania’s markets.
