Tanzania pushes for more accountable and technology-driven public service delivery

Charles Mkoka, Dodoma.

Tanzania has intensified efforts to modernise its public service by promoting accountability, innovation and the use of digital technologies as the government seeks to improve service delivery and respond more effectively to citizens’ needs.

Opening the 2026 Public Service Week celebrations in Dodoma, Minister of State in the President’s Office responsible for Public Service Management and Good Governance, Ridhiwani Kikwete, said public institutions must continue embracing reforms that place citizens at the centre of government services.

Kikwete said the annual event provides an opportunity for public servants, government institutions and citizens to interact, assess achievements and identify areas requiring improvement in the delivery of public services.

“The responsibility of a public servant is not only to execute duties but to ensure services are delivered efficiently, transparently and in a way that meets the expectations of citizens,” he said.

The minister emphasised the need for stronger cooperation between government leaders and public servants, saying continuous dialogue would help identify operational challenges and promote innovation across ministries, departments and agencies.

He said the government would continue strengthening digital systems for human resource management and service delivery in order to improve efficiency, reduce administrative challenges and ensure public institutions operate in line with modern governance standards.

Kikwete also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve staff welfare, including the completion of public servants’ housing projects in several regions including Dodoma, Singida, Ruvuma and Lindi.

He urged public servants to protect and maintain the housing facilities provided by the government while maintaining professionalism, patriotism and commitment to national development.

The minister said the government was also improving training programmes and professional development opportunities to equip public servants with the skills needed to match the changing demands of public administration and technological advancement.

He called on employers across public institutions to ensure proper implementation of career progression procedures, including promotions and training opportunities, to address concerns raised by employees and maintain fairness within the public service.

The Public Service Week celebrations bring together government institutions, private sector organisations and other stakeholders to showcase services, digital innovations and reforms aimed at improving citizens’ access to public services.

This year’s celebrations are being held under the theme: Promoting inclusive accountability for sustainable service delivery.”
