Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office (Regional Administration and Local Government), Prof. Riziki Shemdoe, has commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan for providing a new ambulance to Lushoto District Hospital, saying the vehicle will strengthen emergency healthcare services and improve access to life-saving medical care.

The ambulance was officially handed over to residents by the National Uhuru Torch Race leader, Wazo Mwang'onda, during the Uhuru Torch reception in Lushoto District on Friday, June 26.

Speaking at Kizala Primary School grounds, Prof. Shemdoe said the new ambulance fills a critical gap in the district's healthcare system.

“We sincerely thank President Samia Suluhu Hassan for providing this ambulance to Lushoto District Hospital. The hospital's previous ambulance was reassigned to Mlola Ward, making this new vehicle essential for improving emergency referrals and healthcare services,” he said.

Prof. Shemdoe noted that Lushoto District has eight health centres, but only four currently have ambulances, underscoring the importance of expanding emergency transport services.

National Uhuru Torch Race leader Wazo Mwang'onda also praised President Samia for continuing to expand access to quality healthcare through investments in health infrastructure and medical equipment.

“Today we have witnessed the arrival of a new ambulance provided by President Samia Suluhu Hassan for the people of Lushoto. I am honoured to officially hand it over so that it can serve the community,” Mr Mwang'onda said.

He said the Uhuru Torch leadership was encouraged by the government's continued investment in primary healthcare, including the construction of health centres and dispensaries, as well as the provision of ambulances to improve referral services across the country.

During its tour of Lushoto District, the Uhuru Torch inspected and inaugurated several development projects, including a road project, a tourism hotel, rehabilitation of water storage tanks, completed classrooms, a youth economic empowerment initiative and a health centre.

The torch is expected to continue its nationwide tour in Korogwe District on Saturday.
