NEMC calls for stronger stakeholder collaboration to strengthen environmental conservation efforts

The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) has called for enhanced collaboration among all stakeholders, including the Government, private sector, public institutions, communities and citizens, in efforts to strengthen environmental conservation and management for sustainable development.

Speaking to journalists on June 17, 2026, at the NEMC headquarters in Dar es Salaam, Acting Manager for Public Relations and Communication, Ms. Martha Kawishe, emphasized that environmental protection is a cross-cutting issue that requires active participation, compliance and accountability from all actors in accordance with established environmental laws, regulations and guidelines.

Ms. Kawishe said NEMC continues to implement its statutory mandate through regular project inspections, public awareness campaigns and strict enforcement of environmental regulations aimed at addressing various causes of environmental degradation across the country.

She noted that key focus areas include controlling noise pollution, protecting water sources, preventing indiscriminate waste disposal, regulating wastewater discharge especially during the rainy season, curbing illegal tree cutting, and ensuring that all development projects undergo Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) before implementation.

She also warned the public against individuals impersonating NEMC officials to commit fraud, stressing that all official transactions and payments are conducted strictly through government-approved systems and procedures.

Ms. Kawishe further explained that authorized inspection officers are required to present official identification cards, inspection credentials and legal authorization documents during inspections, adding that most inspection processes are now conducted digitally to enhance transparency and improve service delivery.

“Most inspections are now conducted through a digital system, whereby clients receive a notification immediately after the inspection is completed, enhancing transparency and service delivery,” she said.

She urged citizens to utilize NEMC’s official customer service center by calling the toll-free number 0800 110 115 for information, guidance or to report environmental concerns.

In addition, she encouraged the public to use the government’s e-Mrejesho platform by dialing 15200# to submit feedback, suggestions and reports on environmental issues.

Ms. Kawishe reaffirmed that cooperation between citizens, institutions and other stakeholders remains vital in ensuring effective environmental conservation and sustainable management for the benefit of both present and future generations.
