Zanzibar President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has arrived in Mombasa, Kenya, to represent President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the 11th Our Ocean Conference, a high-level global forum focusing on ocean conservation, climate action and the blue economy.
Dr. Mwinyi arrived on June 17 for the two-day working visit accompanied by First Lady Mariam Mwinyi and Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr. Ngwaru Maghembe.
He was received at Moi International Airport by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya, Cabinet Secretary for Blue Economy and Fisheries, Masoud Ali Mohamed, and Tanzania’s Ambassador to Kenya, Dr. Bernard Yohana Kibesse.
The conference, being hosted in Africa for the first time, is taking place under the theme, “Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future,” and has drawn leaders, policymakers, scientists, development partners and environmental advocates from across the world.
Dr. Mwinyi’s participation underscores Tanzania’s growing commitment to promoting sustainable ocean governance and unlocking opportunities within the blue economy, a sector increasingly recognised as a key driver of economic growth, food security and environmental sustainability.
The three-day gathering, which opened on June 16 and concludes on June 18, is examining a range of pressing issues, including marine conservation, climate change, pollution control and the sustainable use of ocean resources.
Participants are also expected to discuss strategies for strengthening the resilience of coastal communities and protecting marine ecosystems that support millions of livelihoods worldwide.
For Tanzania and Zanzibar, whose economies are closely linked to marine resources through fisheries, tourism and maritime trade, the conference presents an opportunity to strengthen international partnerships and showcase efforts aimed at balancing economic development with environmental protection.
The event is expected to generate new commitments and collaborative initiatives to safeguard oceans while advancing sustainable development goals for future generations.
